Theory: Elections… next fall

While there has been a lot of debate lately about a possible earlier-than-expected election date, whether or not the prime minister categorically ousts them, the scenario relayed to me by a good government source takes a very different approach to the matter. The scenario says that not only will the elections not be held earlier, but they will go so far, i.e. in July 2023, that by-elections, if necessary, will be held in September next year. This particular scenario even has savvy proponents who say that until then, the wiretapping case will inevitably not be in the news.

Within a week, popular singer Antonis Remos crossed the threshold of Megaros Maximos, who made no secret of his friendly feelings for ND, as Mr. Mitsotakis met him at the party’s headquarters before being elected Prime Minister. However, this time the singer did not see the prime minister, but, apparently, a government official. My source did not tell me more, but I suspect that his visit has something to do with Thessaloniki.

Archbishop Jerome is determined to continue using Vouliagmeni’s fillets. It is an area of 97 acres, owned by the Archdiocese, and today it houses the Vouliagmeni Church Orphanage. However, Mr. Hieronimos set three conditions for the final use of the property: firstly, that it be a long-term lease and not a sale, secondly, that the investor who will take it – there was already a “slaughter” on the property in the background – should bear the costs of relocating the orphanage to a property within the city and thirdly, the proceeds go to charitable activities and the training of the clergy Interest is expected to be shown in December in the property adjacent to Asteras Regarding the insistence of the archbishop, the information states that it stems from his – pessimistic – belief that in the coming years the “ghost” of the economic and food crisis is not going to leave Europe.

During the week, the Prime Minister met with AUTH Rector Nikos Papaioannou. The official press release does not mention one part of the discussion between them that was particularly important. The reason is the university police, which especially in AUTH is a necessity, since incidents are especially frequent. And there is no doubt that, unlike other universities, the rector wants this measure to be implemented.

Tomorrow is a special day for Giannis Varvitsiotis as the Mosaic House will be opened in Sparta this afternoon. The 89-year-old former ND minister and historical figure will be the centerpiece of the event, as it was he who came up with the idea of transforming the warehouse-like space into a modern museum that will display the famous Roman mosaics “The Admiration of Europe” and “Orpheus the Animal Charmer” . The first, in fact, is depicted on the Greek version of 2 euros. The idea of Varvitsiotis became a reality with the support of the Ministry of Culture, with a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and with the assistance of the A.G. Leventis. The opening will be attended by the Speaker of the Parliament Kostas Tasulas.

The wiretapping clearly puts pressure on the government and personally on Kyriakos Mitsotakis, limiting the ability to be… strict with your ministers. However, this does not mean that Maximus does not evaluate behavior and situations. In this context, there is dissatisfaction, albeit not expressed, with the minister, who for the second time broke out of the box and acted alone, relying on personal rather than collective good.

You will definitely remember the case of Greek tanker piracy in the Persian Gulf. What is not reported is that Dimitris Dollis played a decisive role behind the scenes for the successful outcome of the case, who traveled to Tehran several times for this purpose. In fact, the way George Papandreou’s former partner and deputy foreign minister acted was very satisfying to the premier, with people familiar with the matter saying that it could not be ruled out in the future.

At the meeting they had yesterday at the Ministry of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos and his Israeli colleague Benjamin Gantz, the main character, usually invisible, was unexpectedly present. Thanasis Valaris, Director of the Office of the Minister of National Defence, against whom, as I told you the other day, dissatisfaction was expressed from the very top. Despite all this, Valaris remains in office, with ministry sources stressing that his move is out of the question, and in the worst case, Valaris will move between Athens and Kavala, which is also the minister’s constituency.

Wrong footnote

Last Sunday, “K” announced its disagreement with the article by Nikos Marantsidis, who has been a regular contributor to the newspaper for many years. It was too big a footnote. Was wrong. On the pages of articles a wide range of opinions is presented, and it is only natural that the newspaper often disagrees with them. “K” remains true to pluralism, pursues and will continue to pursue this polyphony. And first of all, this applies to her permanent employees, who have been speaking freely in her columns for years.
