The US Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the release of Donald Trump’s tax returns to Congress, rejecting the former Republican president’s latest appeal, AFP reports.

The House committee, which until January was in the hands of Democrats, spent three years requesting documents sent by the billionaire to the tax authorities between 2015 and 2020.

But unlike every head of the White House since the 1970s, Donald Trump has always refused to release his tax returns and has fought fiercely in court to block congressional requests.

After numerous episodes, a federal appeals court in late October allowed the IRS to turn over the documents to a House committee. The real estate mogul then filed an emergency appeal with the US Supreme Court to block the transfer.

On November 1, the court suspended the transfer of documents until it receives the necessary information to make a decision on the merits.

After receiving arguments from both sides, she finally rejected Donald Trump’s request on Tuesday. As usual, he did not explain his reasons.

Although he was heavily scrutinized by the former president, the high court has dealt him several setbacks in this area and, in particular, authorized the transfer of financial documents in 2020 to a justice in New York investigating his affairs.

Donald Trump’s lack of transparency, which made his wealth a campaign issue, has fueled years of speculation about the extent of his wealth or potential conflicts of interest.

However, it is not certain that the release of his tax files to Congress will lift the curtain on the affairs of the billionaire, who has just announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

The commission, which requested tax returns to develop ethics rules for the president, should not release them. In January, the Republicans will take control again and likely give up the job.
