An urgent letter European Commission sent by the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakisasking the EU to intervene immediately to resettle the rescued migrants south of Crete.
In connection with the shipwreck, in which 400 migrants were involved, according to the latest reports from the ministry, Mr Mitarakis points out to the recipients of the letter Margariti Schine, Vice-President of the European Commission, and Ylva Johansson, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, that the countries of first admission in the EU are unable to bear the ever-increasing burden of the migration crisis, which is disproportionate to their capabilities.
Finally, Mr. Mitarakis notes that “we ask the Commission to immediately undertake and coordinate a resettlement initiative” to ensure that “responsibility for saving lives at sea is shared among Member States” equitably.
