PSD Senator Robert Kazanchuk announced on Sunday, International Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, that he will revive the initiative to amend the law against drivers who get behind the wheel without a license and cause fatal accidents.
“That is, everyone who thinks they can drive a vehicle without a license, drunk or under the influence of drugs, should know that they will go straight to prison if they cause an accident with fatalities,” said the social democrat.
What Kazanchuk wrote on Facebook:
“Anastasia Lo and the philosophy that kills. In 2021, Romania ranks first in Europe for the fifth consecutive year in terms of the number of people killed in road accidents. A total of 1,779 deaths. One of the reasons is the use of alcohol or illegal substances, as well as negligence or the quality of the road infrastructure.
In 2019, we launched an initiative to change the criminal law so that no drunk, drugged or disqualified driver who causes a fatal accident can avoid prison.
Figures provided by the Romanian police and the Ministry of Justice show a grim reality: 20,000 people appear in court each year for driving without a license, under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Every year, approximately 500 people are killed or seriously injured in accidents caused by drunk or drugged drivers. In the capital, at least in July, there were more drunk drivers than non-drunk drivers.
For absurd political reasons and against the general interest of society to really protect life and put an end to the carnage on Romania’s roads, including through very severe punishments that have a profound preventive role, the initiative was rejected by the decision-making bodies. chambers, as it “contradicts the current philosophy of the Criminal Code.”
Today, on International Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, I am publicly announcing that I will renew the initiative to change the law against drivers who get behind the wheel without having the right to drive and cause fatal crashes.
In other words, anyone who thinks they can drive without a license, drunk or under the influence of alcohol should know that they will go straight to jail if they cause a fatal accident.
An initiative in memory of Cyprian, Ion, George, Alexandra and 100 people who died on the roads from June 8, 2021 (the moment of the rejection vote in the Chamber of Deputies) until today due to unconscious “drivers”.
In memory of Anastasia, a little girl who this year, on Children’s Day, she was only 4 years old, was crushed by a driver without a license, driving madly through the city.
NB The name Anastasia comes from the Greek word “anastas”, which means rebirth (or resurrection). Since the road dead will not be resurrected, this initiative will be revived to protect their loved ones.”
