Players wearing ‘One Love’ armbands at the World Cup in Qatar risk yellow cards before kick-off for breaching FIFA’s kit rules, the Daily Mail reports.

The captains of nine European nations, including Harry Kane (England), Gareth Bale (Wales) and Manuel Neuer (Germany), planned to wear “One Love” armbands to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion and rights in Qatar, the country , which criminalizes same-sex relationships.

BILD suggest that the German FA is currently considering whether Neuer should wear the armband due to the possible consequences, while Kane is likely to wear the armband for England’s match against Iran on Monday.

FIFA’s kit rules state that: “At FIFA tournaments, match officials must wear official clothing and equipment provided by FIFA, including competition badges as determined and provided by FIFA.”

Unofficial accessories such as “One Love” armbands may be considered illegal and players wearing them may be fined or shown yellow cards.

Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the FA, has previously said that England are prepared to be fined for wearing the armband. He said it was “sad” that many of England’s LGBTQ+ fans did not come to Qatar and that it was “very important to show our values”.

Last month, the Football Association of England appealed to FIFA to allow the wearing of the “One Love” armband, but did not receive a response.

FIFA has launched its own captain’s armband as part of a social campaign with the United Nations, which will promote a separate campaign for each round of the tournament. The theme of the quarter finals will be “no discrimination”, but LGBTQ+ rights are not mentioned in any of the campaigns.

Since being appointed in late 2010 to host this global event, Qatar has been the subject of constant criticism over allegations of corruption, inhumane working conditions for migrants, respect for the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the impact on the environment.
