FIFA has announced that alcohol will not be sold in stadiums during the World Cup in Qatar. The World Cup is being held for the first time in a Muslim country where alcohol restrictions are in place.
According to the announcement, only non-alcoholic beer will be allowed to be sold in stadiums. The decision was made two days before the start of the World Cup on November 20, and represents a “180-degree turn” that is sure to provoke a backlash.
It should be noted that one of the main sponsors is the Budweiser brewing company. His agreement with FIFA is worth 75 million euros.
In addition, visitors are prohibited from bringing alcohol into Qatar, even from the airport’s duty-free shop. Fans can’t even buy alcoholic beverages from the country’s only liquor store on the outskirts of Doha, where foreigners with permits can buy for home consumption.
The event’s official goer guide states that “ticket holders will have access to Budweiser, Budweiser Zero and Coca-Cola products within the stadium perimeter” for at least three hours before games and for one hour after them.
