The unicameral parliament of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada, voted on Wednesday to extend martial law in the country and mobilize men of military age, Kyiv Independent reports.
Both measures were extended for 90 days until February 19, 2023. This is the fifth extension approved by the Kyiv parliament since the start of Vladimir Putin’s “special military operation” on February 24.
294 People’s Deputies voted for the continuation of martial law, 297 voted for the continuation of mobilization.
On the first day of the Russian invasion, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced a general mobilization.
Instead, Russia announced a partial mobilization only on September 21, and military bloggers and ultranationalists in Russia blamed President Vladimir Putin for the slowness with which the decision was made, which contributed to the Ukrainians being outnumbered on the battlefield and to Moscow’s military defeat.
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said last week that Ukraine already has a million people protecting the borders with Russia, Belarus and the fronts with territories occupied by Russia.
