Volkswagen may abandon the idea of building a mega-factory for electric cars in Germany, a plant that would require an investment of two billion euros and produce high-end electric cars, writes Reuters.
Manager magazine wrote that VW bosses want to abandon the project, while sources cited by Reuters say Volkswagen is maintaining its plan to create cars called Trinity, models the size of the Passat but with autonomy that could reach 700 km. The difference would be that these cars will not be manufactured at a new plant, but at an existing one.
The Trinity project was announced in the spring of 2021, the goal is for cars to have a high degree of autonomy (level 4 out of 5 possible) and be able to travel hundreds of kilometers on a single charge.
The car will be released in 2026, but the question is where it will be produced. The idea was that it would be assembled in this new German factory, a factory that would also compete with the factory opened by Tesla Motors in Berlin.
In May, Volkswagen announced plans to build a plant near the city of Wolfsburg, where its largest plant is already located. The factory, built from scratch according to the latest standards, will significantly reduce the production time of each car.
