About 50 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded by Ukrainian long-range artillery fire, Kyiv’s army said on Wednesday, a rare case of Ukraine claiming heavy casualties in a single incident, Reuters reported.

In a Facebook post, the General Staff of the Armed Forces said that Russia suffered casualties on Tuesday when Ukrainian forces shelled the village of Deneynikovo, 70 km behind the front line in eastern Luhansk Oblast.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Reuters was unable to independently verify information from the Ukrainian military.

The United States has supplied Ukraine with advanced missile systems capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 80 km.

Last month, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said 23 of his soldiers had been killed and 58 wounded during artillery fire from Ukraine.
