Saddam Hussein’s nephew charged with IS involvement extradited to Iraq

BUT Iraqipresented by Baghdad as Saddam Hussein’s great-nephew, has been extradited from Lebanon to Iraq, where he is accused of involvement in the 2014 Islamic State massacre, an Iraqi security source said today.

Abdullah Sabawi is the “son of a nephew” of former dictator Saddam Hussein, a source told AFP on condition of anonymity. According to him, the extradition took place on Friday.

“He is accused of being a member of the Islamic State and being involved in the Spicer massacre” when hundreds of soldiers were executed by jihadists in 2014, he said.

According to a Lebanese judicial source, Sabawi, born in 1994, “was arrested on 11 June 2022. He was wanted by Interpol on charges of massacres in Iraq.” “Iraq requested his extradition.”

When questioned by AFP, Abdullah Sabawi’s family denied the allegations, saying he was in Yemen when the events took place.

The Spicer massacre is one of the worst perpetrated by ISIS jihadists. In June 2014, as the jihadists had already taken over several cities in northern Iraq, they kidnapped hundreds of mostly Shia recruits from the Spicer Air Base north of Baghdad. They executed them one by one, killing up to 1,700 people. Some of the bodies were thrown into the Tigris River, and most were buried in mass graves.

Many dozens of people were sentenced to death by Iraqi courts for participating in this massacre and sentenced to death.
