Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, announced in an interview with CNN that he will give away most of his $124 billion fortune during his lifetime, but he admitted that it is difficult to determine which of them are more worthy causes that should benefit from the money, writes News .ro. On this occasion, the billionaire announced that he had offered $100 million to country singer Dolly Parton to be distributed to charities of her choice, The Guardian reported.

58-year-old Jeff Bezos is the fourth richest person in the world according to Forbes.

He presented $100 million to country singer Dolly Parton as part of his annual Courage and Civility Award.

“I want to bring a little light, to highlight a little these people who resort to solidarity instead of conflict,” he explained.

The $100 million donation to Dolly Parton is the third donation Bezos has made as part of his Courage and Civility Award, following similar grants to chef Jose Andres and climate change activist Van Jones.

“All she (Dolly Parton – not) wants is to bring light into other people’s worlds. So we couldn’t think of a better person to present this award to than Dolly, and we know she will do amazing things with it,” added the billionaire.

Bezos, who built Amazon from a startup in a rented garage to a $1 billion global business, has been criticized in the past for his relative lack of generosity toward charitable causes compared to other billionaires.

Bezos has not signed the Giving Pledge, a group that encourages the world’s richest people to give half of their wealth to philanthropic causes and was founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. The group has attracted more than 230 signatories, including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

Bezos and his partner, journalist Lauren Sanchez, said they were considering the best way to distribute their wealth to good causes.

“It’s hard to figure out how to do that in a convincing way — it’s not easy. Creating Amazon was not easy. It took a lot of hard work and a bunch of really smart teammates. Philanthropy is very similar. It is very difficult and there are many inefficient ways to do things. We are developing our capacity to be able to offer this money,” said the billionaire.

Bezos did not disclose what percentage of his fortune might be given to charity, nor did he provide details on which causes he might focus on the most.

It has committed $10 billion over 10 years to the Bezos Earth Fund, which Sanchez co-chairs, and Amazon is one of 300 companies that have pledged to reduce their carbon footprint by 2040 in line with the goals of the Paris climate change agreement.

Bezos’ ex-wife Mackenzie Scott, who filed for divorce from her second husband Dan Jewett in September, reached a divorce settlement with Bezos that netted her a record $38 billion, making her the world’s fourth-richest woman. It recently donated $3.8 billion to 465 organizations in less than a year.

In 2018, Bezos took first place in the list of the world’s largest philanthropists (Philanthropy 50), a ranking of the largest US donors compiled by the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Critics say Bezos should be as concerned about the wages and working conditions of Amazon’s employees as he is about philanthropy.
