The arrival of the cold season means new challenges for the troops fighting in Ukraine, especially for the Russian forces – from the shortening of the day and the need for special equipment to the fact that the “golden hour” when you can save a wounded soldier cuts the winter in half. , reports the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain.

Here’s what the British ministry said in its Monday morning assessment:
- Winter will change the fighting conditions for both Russian and Ukrainian forces. Special difficulties for fighters will be created by changes in the length of the day, temperature and weather.
- Any decision of the Russian General Staff will partly depend on the arrival of winter. Daylight will be reduced to 9 hours per day, compared to 15-16 in the height of summer. This results in fewer offensive linemen and a more static defensive line.
- Night vision is a valuable resource that will further increase the reluctance to fight at night.
- The maximum average temperature will decrease from 13 degrees Celsius in September-November to zero degrees Celsius in December-February. Forces without winter clothing and shelter are very vulnerable to frostbite.
- In addition, the “golden hour” interval during which you can save a seriously wounded soldier is reduced by about half, which significantly increases the risk of encountering the enemy.
- The weather itself is likely to result in increased precipitation, wind speed and snowfall. Each of them will create an additional challenge to the already low morale of the Russian forces, as well as problems with the maintenance of equipment.
- Basic practices such as weapon cleaning must be adapted to these conditions and the risk of weapon malfunction increases.
