A 62-year-old woman from Moineşti, Bacău county, sent a total of 80,900 lei in four installments to some people, believing that she was sending the money to a man with whom she was going to have a romantic relationship.

In reality, Bacauanca was the victim of sentimental scammers, and the method by which she was defrauded is known as the “American General.”

The scam is simple: victims are contacted online by strangers posing as people who hold important positions in the US military in various parts of the world. Later, under various pretexts, they ask their future girlfriends to borrow money.

How the “American General” method works.

In the case of the Moineşti woman, she sent money to the bank accounts of another Romanian woman from Giurgiu County, and the woman transferred the amounts to her accomplices in accounts in Nigeria. A 37-year-old woman from Giurgiu is currently in criminal proceedings.

“The investigation showed that in the period from May 2 to 16, the suspect helped unknown persons in committing the crime of fraud using the American General method to the detriment of a 62-year-old woman from Moynesti by receiving a total of 80 900 lei in four parts. This amount will later be transferred in various forms to other people in accounts in Nigeria. The police are continuing the investigation in order to establish all the criminal activities of the persons concerned and bring them to criminal responsibility,” the Bacau County Police, which is dealing with the case, reported on Saturday.

Criminal investigation police officers from Moineşti conducted a search at the woman’s place of residence in Giurgi County, during which physical evidence was discovered and collected.

“The police are paying attention to this form of deception, the method is based on the trust of those who, through the Internet, admit a woman or a man to them, who promises them a friendly relationship, and then convinces them to send them money in order to create a love relationship,” – say investigators .
