French Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard admitted in a statement on Monday that he molested a 14-year-old girl decades ago and said he would step down from his posts, Reuters reported.
“Thirty-five years ago, when I was a parish priest, I behaved shamefully with a 14-year-old girl. My behavior inevitably led to serious and lasting consequences for this person,” Rikard said in a statement.
Ricard apologized and said he would resign from his positions and make himself available to legal and church authorities.
Several years ago, the bishop of Ricard, HervĂ© Gaschinard, was accused of “inappropriate” gestures and words with young people, and in 2017 the Holy See asked Monsignor HervĂ© Gaschinard to “submit a request for resignation,” Yahoo News reported at the time.
