Tens of thousands of people marched in Rome on Saturday, demanding peace in Ukraine and an end to the Italian government sending weapons to fight the Russian invasion, AFP reported.
“No war. No to sending arms,” read a large placard carried by demonstrators — some 30,000, according to police figures cited by the Italian press — who chanted, “Give peace a chance!”.
“At first, the weapons were sent on the grounds that they would prevent escalation. After nine months, it seems to me that there has been an aggravation. Look at the facts: sending weapons doesn’t help stop war, weapons help fuel war,” one protester told AFPTV.
Italy, a founding member of NATO, has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, mainly by supplying weapons.
New far-right Prime Minister Georgia Maloney said that would not change and that the government plans to send more military equipment soon.
But some voices, including former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, say Italy should step up talks instead.
On Friday, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries, including Italy, promised to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
