A man accused of assaulting Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, told police he wanted to hold her hostage and “break her knees,” authorities said Monday, according to the AP.
According to a federal complaint filed in court on Monday, 42-year-old David DePape assaulted Paul Pelosi in the couple’s bedroom in San Francisco on Friday morning, News.ro cited.
Federal prosecutors filed two charges against DePap days after police said he broke into Pelosi’s home and hit the Democratic leader’s 82-year-old husband in the head with a hammer.
He was seriously injured in the attack and underwent surgery for a fractured skull and other injuries to his arms and hands.
DePape is federally charged with influencing, obstructing or retaliating against a federal official by threatening or causing bodily harm to a family member. He is also charged with attempted kidnapping of a United States official in the line of duty.
The announcement of the federal charges comes as the San Francisco district attorney prepares to file state criminal charges against DePape, who police said yelled, “Where’s Nancy?” during the attack.
He was arrested on Friday on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse and breaking and entering. He is to be brought to court on Tuesday.
