“This powerful symbol was chosen to highlight the serious danger the French population faces because the government is not taking important steps to stop global warming,” the group Derniere Rénovation wrote on Twitter on Monday.

The group’s name refers to its demand to urgently modernize buildings in France to become energy efficient, a promise the organization says the Paris government has failed to keep.

“Now it is up to us, ordinary citizens, to fulfill the obligations that our government refuses to take. Civil resistance depends on us,” the organization’s website says.

The protest action of 24-year-old activist Sasha was caught on camera, and later the boy was removed from the roof by firefighters, the group said in a statement.

“There is no longer any scientific doubt that what awaits us if we do not act will be catastrophic and unprecedented,” said the group, which just days ago warned of an imminent climate disaster by blocking a highway near Paris.

“We lowered the flag to the mast because we have to mourn all those who die every year due to floods, fires and hunger: in short, due to climate change,” activist Sasha wrote on Twitter. (Source: Agerpres / DPA)
