Eleven people died on Saturday, including two policemen, in a stampede during a concert by Congolese singer Falli Ipupa at a packed stadium in Kinshasa, the interior minister said, according to Reuters.

The number of spectators at the concert exceeded the 80,000 capacity of the capital’s Martylor Stadium, and some of the crowd eventually broke through to the VIP area and reserved sections, Reuters reporters at the concert said.

Police recorded “11 deaths, including 10 due to strangulation and crushing, and 7 hospitalizations,” Minister Daniel Acelo Okito said in a statement.

Security forces fired tear gas to disperse a violent crowd in the streets outside the stadium, where many had gathered ahead of a concert by Kinshasa-born Ipupa, who has gained popularity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Europe and elsewhere.

The number of visitors to the stadium far exceeded the number that could be controlled by the state and private security services.

In 2020, French police evacuated Gare de Lyon in Paris after people set fires nearby ahead of a planned Ipupa concert.
