The death toll from landslides and flooding caused by torrential rains that hit the south since Thursday has risen to 67. Philippinesaccording to a newer report from the authorities.
Heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in several municipalities in Maguindanao province, Naguib Sinaribo, interior minister of Bangsamoro Autonomous Province in Mindanao, said by phone. Sinaribo said that rescue operations to search for the missing are continuing.
Rushing waters have infiltrated homes in several towns and villages on the island of Mindanao, carrying trees, rocks and mud, mostly in the poor area of Cotabato, a city of 300,000 people.
The military sent trucks to rescue stranded residents of Cotabato and eight other nearby towns, said Nasrullah Imam, head of the regional civil protection.
“It is shocking to see municipalities that were never flooded before they were affected,” Imam said, adding that some families were washed away by the floods.
Rescuers found 27 bodies at Datu One Sinswat, including 11 more victims found in a village buried in mud.
Ten bodies were found at Datu Bla Sinswat and five at Upi, Sinaribo said, noting that many people were saved by climbing onto their rooftops.
