The premiere took place on its platform Netflix a few days ago and succeeded very quickly. Members of the Broadus family thought they were in their prime, living in a quiet suburb and in their expensive new home at 657 Street. But that all changed when they began receiving terrifying letters from a pesky fan, also known as “The Watcher” (“The Watcher” ).

Murphy’s series takes an interesting approach to original material. While the story’s general information is correct, many of the minor characters were created for the needs of fiction. One example is that the character Karen (Jennifer Coolidge) or the strange neighbors (Richard Kidd and Margo Martindale) are partly based on real people. Also, Murphy and his creative team go a little over the top with their portrayal of brutal crime to fit the show’s plot.

The Broadus family, introduced on the show as the Brannocks, receive horrific and threatening letters from an unnamed individual shortly after the 2014 home attack. In fact, the series uses the content of some real letters. As detailed in Widman’s article, the first letter followed a series of events that led the Broadus to reveal the identity of the man who threatened them.

Unlike the series, the Broadus never moved into their new home out of concern for the safety of their children. But some of the neighbors became suspicious, calling the police and hiring detectives to uncover the truth.

The real Langford family, who lived near the house on 657th Street, was a little strange. Peggy was 90 years old and lived with several of her adult children, all in their 60s. Her son Michael was unemployed and known to sometimes break into neighbors’ yards and look into the windows of the house. But he was harmless. So it’s entirely possible that the characters Pearl (Mia Farrow) and Jasper (Terry Kinney) were inspired by the Langfords.

John Emil List was a New Jersey accountant who killed all five members of his family in 1971. Like John Graff (Joe Mandello) on the show, he stole money from his mother’s bank account as he struggled to stay afloat at work. The stress of supporting his family during these financial hardships “suffocated” him emotionally, and so he decided to kill his family to relieve the stress and “save the souls” of its members.

As revealed in “The Observer”, the identity of the Observer remains unknown. The New Jersey District Attorney’s Office said the investigation was ongoing, but not closed either. Judging by the evidence, the suspect may be an elderly woman who lives near Westfield. Broadus sold the house five years after the move. The new owners of the house never received a letter from the “Observer”.
