Some people apparently predicted crises, the economic future, some even saw signs in the stars. They hit, I mean, was it just luck or did they really know? The Star Trek character Spock said something that is also supported by recent economic literature.
We discuss these things, starting with Spock’s statement in a new podcast produced by Florin Barbuta with journalist Florentina Chernat.
In addition to what was said in the Podcast, mention should be made of Johann Fourier’s book, Our Long Road to Economic Freedom, which has a chapter at the end devoted to this topic, reinforcing the idea that no one can predict the future .
He says that: Predicting the future is a dangerous exercise, but that hasn’t stopped us from trying. Hunter-gatherers carefully studied their environment to predict how much food they would have. Early farmers developed sophisticated methods of predicting rainfall. Some tried to find clues to future events in dice, tarot cards, and crystal balls. We can look in some publications and see that there is a section devoted to the horoscope. It makes sense to want to know the future. Knowledge is power and power is money.
