
Clashes erupted today, Wednesday, between security forces and people gathered in the hometown of Mahshi Amini Sagez in the northwestern province of Kurdistan. Iranto honor the memory of a 22-year-old girl 40 days after her death.
“A limited number of those who attended the memorial service for Mahse Amini clashed with police forces on the outskirts of Sagez and dispersed. After scattered clashes, Internet access in Sagez was cut off for security reasons,” the Iranian news agency ISNA reported, adding that the crowd numbered around 10,000 people.
According to reports, Iranian security forces opened fire on the protesters. “Security forces fired tear gas and opened fire on people in Zidane Square in Sagez,” Norway-based Hengaw, an Iranian Kurdish rights group, tweeted.
“OMON opened fire on the crowd at a cemetery ceremony commemorating the end of the 40-day mourning for Masha … dozens of people were arrested,” an eyewitness told Reuters.
Contrary to heightened security measures, believers gathered at a cemetery in Iranian Kurdistan where Amini is buried. The 22-year-old died on September 16, three days after she was arrested in Tehran by morality police for not wearing the hijab properly.
