Russia has notified the United States of its plans to conduct exercises of its nuclear forces, the Pentagon said on Tuesday, declining to provide further details about the drills, which are expected to include ballistic missile tests.
“The United States has been notified, and as we’ve emphasized before, this is a regular annual Russian exercise,” Air Force spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said at a briefing. “So in that sense, Russia is honoring its arms control obligations and its transparency obligations by making these communications.”
The drills come as Russia told the UN Security Council it was concerned Ukraine was preparing to detonate a “dirty bomb” containing conventional explosives mixed with radioactive material to blame Russia for escalating the war.
The Kremlin again complained on Tuesday that the United States was not taking seriously its warnings about Ukraine’s alleged plans to detonate a nuclear weapon, a so-called “dirty bomb,” on its own soil.
