China: no women in Communist Party Politburo

The new composition of the Politburo, the governing body of the Communist Party of China, announced today, for the first time in 25 years, there are no women among its members.

Sun Chunlan, the only woman in the 25-member organization, has retired and none of its new members are women.

The new Politburo this time has 24 members.

Yesterday, the new composition of the Central Committee, the inner-Party “parliament” of about 200 members, with only 11 women, was announced.

“Women are still underrepresented at the top of Chinese politics,” specialized website Neican China noted today. According to the same source, the percentage of women in the new Central Committee decreased from 5.4% to 4.9%. “For comparison, women make up 48.8% of China’s population and 29.4% of Communist Party members,” the website says.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who was re-elected today as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China for a third consecutive five-year term, has appointed several of his closest allies to the Standing Committee, a seven-member body believed to hold the keys to power for the Asian giant.

Li Qiang, head of the party organization in Shanghai, Ding Suexiang, special secretary of the head of state, and Li Xi, head of the party organization in Guangdong Province (center), are among the new members of the commission, her cameras captured the state of the television in the People’s Palace, a building in Soviet style towering over Beijing’s sprawling Tiananmen Square.
