Raluka Bobeyka, chief nephrologist at the Fundeni Clinical Institute, spoke about Roxadustat, a banned substance for which Simona Halep received a positive result.
The use of roxadustat brings “more disadvantages than advantages”
Three years ago, Bobeica participated in clinical trials using Roxadustat to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.
The specialist says that the drug was generally well tolerated by those who took part in the study, but he does not believe that it will increase physical resistance and that people who use it will have more disadvantages than advantages.
“The adverse reactions I have encountered in patients have been hypertension, exacerbation of hypertension or the onset of hypertension in those who were not hypertensive, and increased blood viscosity manifested through thrombosis.
There is no problem that it was not approved here. Medicines arrive here with a little delay, but there is no problem that they are not accepted.
In my opinion, if someone other than Simone used it with good intentions, I think it would have more disadvantages than advantages. In the sense that the tension increases, and it can even harm the sport, the viscosity of the blood increases and, I think, more fatigue can occur.
Not sure why it’s on the banned list. Maybe because we have more hemoglobin, more blood if we use this substance, and probably that’s why it was considered doping.
We did not notice such an effect in patients (absence of increased physical resistance). This is not a very noticeable effect. I used it strictly for medical purposes, to treat anemia in patients with chronic renal failure” – Raluka Bobeika for News.ro.
