China’s Communist Party agreed on Sunday to include in its constitution for the first time a statement of Beijing’s opposition to Taiwan independence, according to a resolution released at the end of a CPC congress.

According to the resolution cited by AFP, the congress “agrees to include in the party’s constitution statements regarding (…) firm opposition and containment of separatists who want Taiwan independence.”

China’s Communist Party on Saturday enshrined in its constitution the “central role” of President Xi Jinping, who is expected to win a third term as leader of the party, and therefore the country, on Sunday.

The party’s nearly 97 million members must “defend Comrade Xi Jinping’s central role in the Party Central Committee and the Party as a whole,” according to a resolution passed unanimously shortly before the end of the CPC Congress in Beijing.
