“The Israeli enemy launched airstrikes from the northeast, targeting places near Damascus,” the Syrian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that most of the missiles were intercepted.

Earlier, the official Syrian news agency Sana announced that the Syrian air defense intercepted a “missile attack in the airspace of Damascus and the southern region.”

The strikes hit Syrian military bases near Damascus International Airport and south of the capital, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In September, five Syrian soldiers were killed in an Israeli strike near Damascus.

In June, another strike shut down Damascus airport for two weeks.

Other Israeli strikes hit Aleppo airport in August and September.

Since the start of Syria’s civil war in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against its northern neighbor, targeting Syrian government forces as well as their Iranian-backed allies and Hezbollah militants.

Israel justified these strikes by the need to prevent Iran from gaining a foothold near its borders.
