German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their desire to relax on the night from Thursday to Friday in Brussels after tensions flared during the day between Paris and Berlin, writes AFP.
“The cooperation between Germany and France, as well as between the chancellor and the president, is intense and fruitful,” the German leader said at the end of the first day of the European summit, which led to a joint road map to try to lower energy prices, Agerpres reports.
Asked about the friction with the French head of state, who on Thursday reinforced his regrets and warned against the possible isolation of Germany, Olaf Scholz recalled that they saw each other “regularly” and had already agreed on a new meeting on Wednesday in Paris.
However, next week’s meeting will replace a Franco-German ministerial council that was postponed due to disagreements on numerous issues.
The German chancellor assured that he “in no way” felt isolated during the long and troublesome energy negotiations.
Arriving at the Council of the European Union, the two leaders had a half-hour meeting in private on Thursday, without advisers, before joining other EU leaders.
This meeting “made it possible to clarify many things” in order to “get German consent” to the final text, Emmanuel Macron expressed his satisfaction to the press, assessing that France had played its “role” by creating “unity between positions”.
“We don’t always have the same positions, which is normal,” he said again, as if downplaying the differences that had been highlighted by the French camp before and during the summit.
