The chairman of the Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee, Graham Brady, laid down the rules for the internal contest on Thursday:

  • – Any candidate running for the leadership of the Conservative Party will need to have at least 100 nominations from party MPs, so candidates will need at least 100 nominations to get on the ballot.
  • – Nominations will start on Thursday evening and end on Monday at 16:00 Romanian time
  • – If a single candidate collects the nominations of 100 deputies, there will be no voting for party members, and that candidate will automatically become the party leader and prime minister on Monday.
  • – The first vote of parliamentarians will take place on Monday from 17.30 to 19.30 Romanian time.
  • – In the case of three candidates, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated. The result will be announced at 20:00 Romanian time
  • – About 170,000 members of the Conservative Party will vote online to choose between the two final candidates.
  • – If a repeat vote is required, it will take place on Monday between 20.30 and 22.30 Romanian time. The result will be announced at 23.00 Romanian time.
  • – Voting for party members will end on Friday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m. Romanian time, and the results will be announced the same day.

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, two of Liz Truss’ rivals in the previous race to become UK prime minister this year, are expected to re-enter the race to become the country’s next prime minister following Liz Truss’ resignation on Thursday, reports Sky News. On the other hand, Boris Johnson is also expected to enter the race for the Conservative leadership, the Times reported, The Guardian reported.

A YouGov poll of Tories this week suggested Boris Johnson could be the most popular candidate to replace Truss.
