On Tuesday, one man died and another was in critical condition in hospital at the crosswalk at the corner of Splaiul Unirii cu bd. A slaughterhouse, a place where road accidents often occur.
People have been asking the capital city hall to take measures for the safety of pedestrians since 2019. But nothing happened, even though people were informed last August that a traffic light would be installed.
Asked on Digi 24 on Thursday night when they will install a traffic light at Unirii splai, especially since there was a fatal accident there on Thursday, Nikusor Dan avoided a direct answer by showing the city hall’s costs for markings and traffic lights.
“For which means of road marking, the City Hall paid zero lei, 2020 – zero lei. Last year we managed to pledge 7 million lei, and now in 2022 we are going to 20 million lei. What do the traffic lights mean, 2020 – 2 million lei, 2021 – 12 million lei, 2022 – 28 million lei. There are some problems that have become more acute over time because no investments have been made and for which we are operating according to the budget, much more than in the past years,” Nikusor Dan said, according to News.ro.
The Mayor General explained that the traffic lights in the Unirii area of Bucharest are working on an intermittent yellow color due to unauthorized work in Sector 3. The Mayor clarified that an excavator had cut several cables, but that the situation would be corrected in a few days.
“Only one thing has happened, the unauthorized work on Piaţa Unirii, this is the biggest problem that the mayor of Sector 3 has done, which has destroyed the traffic lights in the Unirii area, for which more people have been allocated to the regional union and there are probably service delays. In general, the traffic lights are good. He actually cut several cables with the backhoe bucket. There are workers at the construction site, it will take a few more days,” said Nikushor Dan.
