Some even see a a very smart alternative to electricitythanks to a higher autonomy and one very short recharge time.
And while these vehicles are developing, other forms of energy, such as diesel, are experiencing great difficulties. But thanks to a group of Australian researchers, this fuel may not see its last days!
Miracle engine?
It seems very strange, but it is true. Scientists from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, managed to operate a diesel engine is transformed by a hydrogen mixture and with ordinary diesel.
And their system even allowed it to be done reduce CO2 emissions by more than 85% ! But how does the miracle engine work?
Professor Sean Cook, Director of the Propulsion Research Laboratory, explains: “ We have shown that we can convert diesel engines into cleaner hydrogen-powered engines“.
For this, the original diesel injection was retained and hydrogen injection was added. Thanks to the independently controlled supply of two fuels and stratification in the cylinder, harmful exhaust gases during combustion can be avoided.
Engineers at @UNSW successfully converted a diesel engine to burn 90% hydrogen and 10% diesel, reducing pollutants by 85%. The dual-fuel engine has a 26% higher efficiency than a diesel engine.

Is this the salvation for all diesels?
While this is good news on paper, the transformation looks pretty planned for now big engines According to the researchers, ” any diesel engine used in trucks and motorized equipment in transport, agriculture and mining can eventually be converted to a new hybrid system in just a few months“.
Hydrogen is interesting because it is a fuel that does not directly emit CO2. Indeed, the gas is formed by the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen with the help of electricity (electrolysis). If the required energy is produced with the help of solar or wind energy, the production also does not harm the environment. This is called “green hydrogen”.

Usually hydrogen turns into electrical energy in cars equipped with a Fuel cell. Thus, traditional hydrogen cars are actually electric cars with a built-in mini power plant. Instead of smelly exhaust gases, the use of H2 in fuel cells produces only harmless water vapor.
The researchers are currently looking for investors to commercialize the results of their laboratory. If they find it, maybe trucks, cargo ships and transport buses will soon be powered by this type of engine!
