Estimates made so far by meteorologists indicate that average temperatures in December “may exceed climatic limits”, while January will be “normal or slightly above average”. We should all be aware of what a normal winter means in Romania (…), by no means what was recorded in recent years (…) where we had a much milder cold season than usual for our of the country,” said Gabriela Băncilă, director of the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) on Thursday.

Gabriela Băncilă said during a video conference with prefects on winter preparations that the seasonal estimates have a degree of achievement of 60% based on the model of the European Center for Long-Term Average Forecasting and represent estimated average values ​​in terms of air temperature and precipitation.

• “This means that phenomena with a short duration of manifestation, including extreme weather events, cannot be surprised, cannot be predicted with the help of these estimates, for example, for the cold season, episodes of cold waves, episodes of blizzards or with snow. thunderstorms,” ​​explained the meteorologist.

She showed that for December, estimates based on data from early October suggest nationally that average temperatures “may be above the climatic limits for the month” in all regions, and precipitation will be generally within normal limits with a slightly excess trend for in the southeast of the country and a deficit in the northwest.

• “In January, both the average air temperature and the average amount of precipitation may be within the normal range.
• Again, compared to other published estimates for this month, the signal for temperature is more robust, with all models converging to a normal January or slightly above normal time-averaged temperature for the precipitation area. The signal or estimates are quite scattered: there are trends for normal rainfall as well as trends towards excess rainfall.
