The song, which was added to the platform in 2010, is the 225th video to join the billion-stream channel group and the seventh video since the 1980s to reach the milestone. The ballad, written by the band’s lead singer and lyricist Sting, was originally released as part of the band’s last 1983 album, Synchronicity.

The music video, directed by British music duo Godley & Creme, featured three members of the police in black and white with Sting on double bass, Andy Summers on guitar and Stuart Copeland on drums.

In 2019, “Every Breath You Take” was named the most played song at the BMI Pop Awards with 15 million radio plays. The song also entered the group of those who had one billion streams on Spotify in 2021 when it surpassed 1 billion streams on the platform.

The Police are known for such hit albums as “Reggatta de Blanc” (1979), “Zenyatta Mondatta” (1980) and “Synchronicity”. The group has sold over 75 million records worldwide and won two Brit Awards, an MTV Music Award and six Grammy Awards, including in categories such as Best Pop Duo or Group Performance for “Every Breath You Take”. In 2003, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The police channel on YouTube has over 1.5 million subscribers, and according to the platform, the Every Breath You Take video is averaging over 300,000 views daily to date.

The popularity of the song continues to be fueled by the licensing of other artists to cover “Every Breath You Take”.
