The Verkhovna Rada, the unicameral parliament of Ukraine, recognized the Chechen Republic of Ikikeria as a territory temporarily occupied by Russia and condemned Moscow’s genocide of the Chechen people, Ukrainian Pravda reports.
“The Council supported the recognition of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria as temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation and the condemnation of the genocide of the Chechen people,” People’s Deputy from the “Voice” party Yaroslav Yelenyak reported on Telegram.
The draft law stipulates that Ukraine no longer recognizes the occupation of the territory of Izykeria by Russia and qualifies the existing regime in this territory as occupation.
Ukraine also calls on UN member states and international organizations to investigate Russian crimes in Iquiqueria and bring the perpetrators to justice, as well as to recognize the country as occupied by Russia.
Hundreds of thousands of civilians died during the Iquiqueria War
It is estimated that from 1994 to 1996, during the first Chechen war, between 30 and 100,000 civilians were killed by the Russian armed forces. The conflict ended with the victory of the separatists and recognition of the region’s independence.
According to some estimates, the number of Russian soldiers who died in the conflict is 80 thousand, but officially Russia recognizes the loss of only 5.5 thousand soldiers. Despite the peace treaty, Russian special services killed the first president of Ikikeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev.
In 1999, under the pretext of “protecting the civilian population”, Russia started a second war with Iquiqueria and occupied the country. Guerrilla war in the country lasted until 2009.
Russia declared Ikikeria a “subject of the Russian Federation” under the name “Chechen Republic”, and Akhmat Kadyrov became the leader of the region.
After his assassination, he was succeeded by his son Ramzan, now one of the most loyal associates of President Vladimir Putin.
Ramzan Kadyrov announced on October 5 that Putin had promoted him for the second time in six months in recognition of his contribution to the “special military operation” the Kremlin leader launched in late February.
Volunteers from Izikeria signed up to fight on the side of Ukraine in the war, but their number is unknown.
