
Gheorghe Novac, a former legendary player of the Dynamo club and the national team, died at the age of 77, the Romanian Basketball Federation reports.
Novac made his basketball debut in 1961 at Clubul Rapid Bucharest, where he played for a year under the guidance of Dr. Tudor Minescu. Then he was registered in “Olympia” (Ministry of Education), in the period 1961-1962, division B (coach Stela Rusu).
However, he became a player of the Dynamo club (1964-1981), coached by Dan Niculescu. In “Dynamo” he won 13 national titles, participated in the same number of editions of CCE (fifth place in 1975), according to News.ro.
He was present in the national team in the period 1965-1980, making more than 300 tackles. As part of the national team, he participated in five FIBA Eurobasket final tournaments: 1965, 1967 (5th place), 1969, 1973 and 1975.
As a coach, he coached “Dynamo” in 1981-1982 (assistant coach) and 1983-1990 (head coach), winning the national championship twice.
He was also the coach of the representative men’s national team (1985-1991), winning two EC qualifications in the first group of value.
He was a member of the French Federal Bureau of Basketball and the Central College of Coaches. Engaged in methodical and research activities, participated with special reports at symposiums and communication sessions of FR Basketball and Dynamo club.
In 1991-1996, he was the executive president of the Dynamo club.
He was an honorary master of sports and an honorary coach.
