More than 500 settlements were liberated in the northeast of Kharkiv region, where Ukrainian troops advanced deep into Russian borders last month, the ministry said on Thursday.

He also stated that 43 settlements were liberated in Donetsk region, seven in Luhansk region.

“The area of liberated Ukrainian territories has increased significantly,” the ministry’s website says.

Reuters was unable to independently verify reports from the scene of the battle, and there was no immediate confirmation from the Ukrainian military or the office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions were “annexed” by Moscow late last month, while a counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces advanced rapidly in the northeast, east and south. The “annexations” of Kyiv and the West were condemned as illegal.

On Thursday, the Russian-appointed governor of Ukraine’s Kherson region urged residents of the region to evacuate amid fighting between advancing Russian and Ukrainian forces.

At the end of August, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive against Russian forces that had been occupying the country since the beginning of the invasion in February.
