Norwegian police arrested a Russian man at an airport in the Arctic city of Tromsø after he flew a drone and took several photos of the airport and a Bell defense force helicopter, Reuters reported.
Police seized a large amount of photography equipment, including a drone and several memory cards, during the arrest on Friday of a 51-year-old man who admitted to operating the drone in Norway, police said.
In Norway, Russian citizens and companies are prohibited from operating aircraft.
“Among the seized material we reviewed, we saw photos from Kirkenes Airport and images of a Defense Force Bell helicopter,” police prosecutor Jacob Berg said in a statement.
According to Berg, the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) was also involved in the case.
The police are asking the court to remand the man for four weeks.
The accused told police that he had entered Norway through the northern border crossing of Sturskug on Thursday and was heading to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard.
This is the second arrest of a Russian citizen for operating drones in Norway in a week. Another man was detained for an initial period of two weeks after he was caught at the Sturskoog border crossing.
