“Saturated with Allied Promises”

“Greece,” wrote Kathimerini on April 23, 1922, interpreting the climate that existed in the political leadership of the country regarding the attitude of the Allies in Asia Minor, “has now been chosen by these discussions, the courts, the decisions of the Allies and the Alliance promises. He remembers hour after hour how many times he was inspired by faith in these promises, how many times he waited in faith for solutions, how many times he hoped, was disappointed, ascended to heaven and fell into the abyss. . And he concluded: “Returning from long and beautiful planes, it has reached a bitter but critical moment of reality. […] She will terrify her enemies, with her troops, with her army, with her little money, with the same means. Foreign spearmen know they won’t fight for her.”

As for the second part of the reasoning developed by the article – the possibility, that is, Greece, to “bring together” the Kemalist forces on its own, then there have been enough doubts since then. As for the first – practical, that is, support by the allies of her efforts in Asia Minor – there were no doubts, only certainty. Confidence that there was no such support – especially after the Gallo-Kemal and Italo-Turkish treaties.

Regarding these conditions and the debate in the British House of Commons, Magestianos Phylax wrote (and reprinted K): “The two powers jointly responsible for the solution of the Middle East question have become divided. By this act they tied their hands and made it impossible to act impartially in the common interest in matters affecting every European country. This is a vicious and shameful failure.”

For its part, the British Government stated, regarding the Italo-Turkish treaty, that “it did not know that this agreement would be drawn up.” At the same time, he opened channels of communication with Soviet Russia. According to a telegram from London: “The Loud George Press publishes an article apparently inspired by the fact that England regards post-Russian friendship as a powerful weapon in the solution of the Middle East question.”
