On Friday, Hungary officially launched “national consultations” regarding European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia, which Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly criticized, AFP reports.

“We believe that sanctions are destroying us,” the government said on its Facebook page, publishing the form. But they were approved by all 27 member states, including Hungary.

Do you agree with sanctions that raise food prices, increase the “risk of hunger in developing countries” and “migratory pressure” at Europe’s borders: this is one of seven questions in a form sent to eight million households.

Another questionnaire asks the opinion of citizens about measures related to Russian energy, whether they have been adopted or are only being discussed.

This Brussels strategy has led to record bills, “putting at risk the ability of households to heat their homes and the entire viability of the European economy,” the organization said.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Hungary, which is heavily dependent on Russian hydrocarbon imports, has diligently maintained good relations with the Kremlin in order to continue receiving gas and oil.

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto was still in Moscow on Thursday to attend the energy forum, contrary to the position taken by his European partners.

In Friday’s radio interview, Viktor Orban once again criticized the sanctions adopted “by the European elite in an undemocratic way.”

He justified these consultations with the desire to “create a national consensus.” Citizens must respond by December 9.

The government has repeatedly used this method without legal consequences, for example to condemn the EU’s migration policy or the payment of compensation to prisoners and Roma.
