After the explosionWhat happened on Saturday morning on the Kerch bridge, which crosses the strait between the Black and Azov seas and connects Crimea with Russia, part of the road bridge collapsed into the water, leaving practically only one viable lane out of 4 to cross the bridge by car. At the same time, the railway bridge was also damaged, after the tank train traveling on the bridge caught fire immediately after the explosion.
The railway bridge across the Kerch Strait has two railway tracks, one of which remained intact and is currently open to traffic, albeit with severe fire restrictions.
However, the damage to the track where the tank train burned is extensive, and it is currently unknown whether the damage is also structural. The published video from the scene after the evacuation of a part of the wagons engulfed in fire shows the extent of the destruction.
The images show that the rails actually melted under the weight of the burning cars and were significantly deformed. Several elements related to the railway track – signaling, power supply, etc. – were affected in batches.
In addition, the roadway side of the bridge, where three sections of the bridge collapsed into the water, sagged heavily to the side and may indicate structural problems. Currently, the Russians have not yet completely cleaned the site of the fire and are still assessing the extent of the damage.
