The websites of several major US airports were briefly shut down on Monday after a group of pro-Russian hackers called for them to be hacked, AFP writes.
They became victims of a DDoS (denial of service) attack, which consists of attacking a computer system by flooding it with messages or connection requests.
Several airports were targeted, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York.
They were targeted after a pro-Russian hacking group known as Killnet published a list of its sites and urged supporters to attack them.
There were no reports of disruptions to the airport, and the operation only affected the public web interface, which normally displays flight and service information.
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport later tweeted that its website was “down after an early morning incident that rendered it unavailable to the public.”
“The investigation to determine the cause of the incident is ongoing,” he said, adding that “the operation of the airport was never affected.”
Most of the affected airport websites now appear to be working normally.
Last week, Killnet claimed cyberattacks on several official US government websites.
