In winter, we have a very high level of pollution at night, there is a factor called thermal inversion, says Cesare Copacianu, Airly’s communications manager.
“This phenomenon occurs especially in winter, and therefore we have very high levels of pollution at night,” she told the conference.
What is really going on?
“During the day we pollute, but in the evening, because we normally expect pollution to rise into the atmosphere, it actually descends. All the pollution during the day that we have created reaches our level and we breathe it in winter,” Copacianu also stated.
Therefore, she says, it is not recommended to open the window in winter and ventilate the house at night.
Which cities are the most polluted?
Romania has less polluted cities as well as more polluted ones.
“Constanța and Tulcea, for example, are less polluted cities because of their location by the sea. Bucharest, Ilfov, Iasi, Covasna and Dolj are very polluted cities,” Airly’s representative also noted.
According to her, the causes of pollution vary depending on the context.
“If we look at big cities, we are talking about intense traffic. In general, this is the main factor. If we look at smaller cities that are highly polluted, although we are not talking about traffic, we can talk about intensive polluting activities. We can discuss the factory’s activities,” said Cesare Kopacianu.
