The Kremlin on Sunday hailed OPEC+’s decision this week to cut oil production as it helped successfully counter what it said was “chaos” sown by the United States in global energy markets.
OPEC+’s decision to cut oil production despite stiff U.S. opposition further strained already strained relations between President Joe Biden’s White House and the Saudi royal family, Reuters reported on Saturday, News.ro reported.
The White House stepped in to prevent OPEC+ from cutting oil production. Biden is hoping to prevent another spike in U.S. gas prices ahead of midterm elections in which his Democratic Party is fighting to retain control of the U.S. Congress.
Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov said on Sunday that it is very good that such “balanced, careful and planned actions of the countries that occupy a responsible position in OPEC oppose the actions of the United States.”
“This at least balances the chaos that the Americans are causing,” Peskov said, according to Russian news agencies.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that OPEC+’s decision to cut oil production is “unnecessary and unwise” for the global economy, the Financial Times reports.
Peskov said that the US began to lose its cool due to OPEC’s decision and is even trying to push additional volumes of its reserves onto the market.
“They are trying to manipulate their oil reserves by dumping additional volumes on the market. Such a game will not lead to anything good,” said Peskov.
