Ukrainian troops are advancing in the eastern Luhansk region, which until now was almost completely controlled by the Russians, the Ukrainian governor of this region, Serhii Gaidai, said on Wednesday, France Presse reports, citing Agerpres.
“Now it’s official. The liberation of Luhansk region has begun. Several settlements have already been liberated from the hands of the Russian army,” Gaidai said in a video posted on Telegram, without specifying the names of these settlements.
“The Ukrainian flag was raised there by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We are advancing thanks to our Armed Forces,” Gaidai emphasized.
In recent weeks, the Ukrainian army has made significant progress in the north of southern Kherson region and recaptured almost all of Kharkiv region in the northeast from the Russians, paving the way for a continued counteroffensive into Luhansk region, a separatist stronghold established by Moscow since 2014.
According to Ukrainian estimates, in September Russian troops controlled 98% of Luhansk region.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Tuesday that only this week “dozens of settlements” were liberated in four oblasts annexed by Russia: Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled a law on Wednesday that formalizes the annexation, which was officially decided on Friday.
