EKPA: Reconstruction will bring… safety

Just as ridiculous as the comment about how long this perfect and fresh image of layouts will last without graffiti and damage. “K” represents today, Athens University strives to offer its students a new, modern – from all sides – student hostel. Renovation started in 2nd student residence EKPA (FEPA) will result in larger ensuite single rooms as well as rooms configured to accommodate people with special needs. Until now, the 2nd FEPA had 138 beds in single rooms, some of which had their own bathroom and shared toilets (1 toilet for 4 rooms). At the same time, it is believed that the refurbishment of the dormitory will also improve the security of the students living in it, since it is clear that students and officials will be mobilized to protect the new premises. In particular, the University of Athens, participating in the ProGETonE project, continues the reconstruction of the 2nd building of FEPA with an increase in its area and modern infrastructure. In more detail, 14 European organizations are collaborating on the innovative ProGETonE H2020 project to provide new ways to renovate buildings by improving their seismic safety using an external metal frame, which at the same time offers additional spaces in apartments (balconies, extensions and winter gardens) , dramatically reducing energy consumption while maintaining a user-driven approach with a high level of architectural aesthetics.

As a result of the renovation, single rooms with bathrooms will be increased, as well as other apartments adapted for people with special needs.

Students and officials are expected to mobilize to protect the new spaces.

Such as said K. Rector of the University of Athens Thanos Dimopoulos, an institution with the Department of Physics and Academic Supervisor Prof. Margarita-Niki Asimakopoulou is a partner of the project, whose tasks include, among others, computational studies of energy at a theoretical level, optimization of energy models, registration and evaluation of monitoring of thermal and electrical behavior, as well as indoor air quality before and after renovation. “The energy efficiency we aim to achieve with the project is superior to that of a conventional refurbishment. Along with the use and integration of renewable energy sources, i.e. photovoltaic systems, the goal of the project is focused on creating student residences with almost zero energy consumption. A fact that makes the project one of the most innovative and sets the tone for the university of the future. This intervention is one of the most important projects for the modernization of student dormitories, a project for the benefit of students, a goal that was set by the rector from the very beginning,” said Mr. Dimopoulos.

Such as This was reported to “K” by its president, Mr. Kostas Serbos., INEDIVIM, among other things, has facilitated a tender for four studies for the renovation of student dormitories, and part of them are already being implemented in two of them to fully, comprehensively and long-term solve their problems. In addition, tenders for maintenance projects have been launched in 17 centers in cooperation with universities to address mid-term maintenance issues. Additional projects and studies are being prepared and will move forward immediately. At the same time, the Wi-Fi network was installed in 10 houses. In the same context, IT projects are being promoted to modernize and streamline student care processes, such as a web-based platform for student housing maintenance.
