Russia has dismissed the commander of the army’s Western Military District, Oleksandr Zhuravlev, the latest in a series of high-ranking officials dismissed after a series of defeats and humiliations in the war in Ukraine, RBC reports, citing Reuters.

Colonel General Oleksandr Zhuravlev will be replaced by Lieutenant General Roman Berdnikov, RBC reports, News.ro writes.

There was no official confirmation of the change, as reported by other news sites.

The Western Military District is one of the five that are part of the Russian Armed Forces.

The announcement of Yuravlyov’s release follows Russia’s dramatic losses in northeastern Ukraine last month and the recapture of Lyman by Ukrainian forces on Saturday. Moscow used Lyman as an important logistics center in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine’s seizing of the initiative in the seven-month war drew consternation from allies in the Kremlin and rare public derision from senior Russian officials, including two allies of President Vladimir Putin.

Last week, the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced the change of Deputy Minister of Rear Support, General Dmytro Bulgakov.

The commander of the Black Sea Fleet was also fired in August after a series of humiliations, including the sinking of a flagship warship and the loss of eight warplanes during an attack on a Russian base on the Crimean peninsula, the agency reported at the time. Russian press RIA.
