Over the past 48 hours, Ukrainian forces continued to make significant gains around the city of Lyman and in the Kherson region, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in an assessment released Tuesday morning.
Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that Ukrainian troops advanced significantly in the north of the Kherson region from October 2 to 3.
Geolocated images confirm claims by Russian sources that Ukrainian troops continue to advance east of Liman and may have breached the border of Luhansk region in the direction of Kreminnaya.
Russian groups in the north of the Kherson Region and on the Liman Front consisted mainly of units that were considered to be among the best conventional combat forces of Russia before the war.

It is reported that units of the 144th Motorized Rifle Division of the 20th Combined Arms Army withdrew from Liman to rearguard positions near Kreminnaya by October 2.
Earlier, Russian sources reported that units of the Airborne Forces (Airborne Forces) of Russia, in particular the 76th Guards Airborne Assault Division, operate in the Kherson region.
Both the 144th Motorized Rifle Division and the 76th Guards Assault Division were previously considered among Russia’s most elite forces, and their apparent inability to hold territory against major Ukrainian counterattacks is consistent with ISW’s earlier assessment that even Russia’s elite troops are becoming increasingly degraded as the war continues.
This phenomenon was also seen in the collapse a few weeks ago of the 4th Tank Division of the 1st Guards Tank Army during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kharkiv.

Moscow dismissed the commander of the Western Military District of the army Oleksandr Yuravlev, RBC reported on Monday. The Western Military District is one of the five that are part of the Russian Armed Forces. Yuravlev’s release follows dramatic Russian losses in northeastern Ukraine last month and Ukraine’s recapture on Saturday of the city of Lyman, which Russia used as an important logistics hub in the Donetsk region.
