British comedian John Oliver (pictured) and host of the successful TV show “Last Week Tonight” are now among Britons backing a reunion of the Parthenon sculptures. Referring to stolen antiquities found in museums around the world, he called the British Museum “the world’s largest lost section” and pointed to the example of the Parthenon sculptures removed from Greece by Lord Elgin in the 19th century.

(…) After pressure from activists and photographer Nan Goldin, the Victoria and Albert Museum also removed Sackler’s name from its walls, following the example of the MET, the Guggenheim Museum, the British Museum, etc. Demonstrations led by the famous photographer show the connection between Sackler’s donations and the role families in an opioid crisis. This theme is featured in Laura Poitras’ award-winning documentary All Beauty and Bloodshed.

(…) The well-known German visual artist Georg Baselitz, in a letter sent to the Munich Museum and the German Minister of Culture, asked to remove Adolf Seeger’s triptych “The Four Elements” from the museum’s permanent collection, claiming that he was associated with the Nazi regime and called the work “Nazi propaganda” .
