Apple abandons plans to increase production of new iPhones this year, as the expected increase in demand has not been confirmed.
The company has ordered its suppliers to halt efforts to boost iPhone 14 assembly line capacity to 6 million units in the second half of this year, according to Bloomberg.
Instead, Apple will aim to build 90 million devices over that period, which is roughly the same as last year.
Demand for more expensive iPhone 14 Pro models is higher than for cheaper versions.
The news sent Apple shares down 3.3% in the Wall Street presale session.
In China, the world’s largest smartphone market, a slowdown in the economy is weighing on iPhone sales. In the first three days of the launch of the iPhone 14 series in the country, sales fell 11% compared to the iPhone 13 last year, according to Jeffries.
Global demand for electronics is also declining due to rising inflation, fears of a recession and turmoil from the war in Ukraine. IDC predicts that the smartphone market will shrink by 6.5% this year to 1.27 billion units.
