
“The absolute priority is the extraversion of Greek universities, as well as the importance of international academic partnerships,” said the Minister of Education. To achieve this goal, the announcement continues, the Ministry of Education has developed a three-part strategy:
1. Providing extensive financial instruments to support universities in this endeavor by:
20 million euros for activities for the internationalization of Greek universities
€60 million for the visiting professor program
2. Creation of a new legislative base providing:
– further freedom for Greek universities to establish a wider range of partnerships (e.g. joint/double degrees, joint research centres, summer and winter study programmes, English language programmes) and
– automatic academic recognition of scientific titles from abroad, cancellation of individual applications for DOATAP for holders of titles from recognized educational institutions.
3. Initiate strategic partnerships with key players such as Europe, US, UK and others.
In addition, the report states that in November “representatives of 30 leading American universities interested in synergy with Greek universities are expected in our country.”
There are 104 students from 26 countries studying in two English-language departments, a medical education program and an English-language undergraduate program in archeology, history and literature of ancient Greece.
The Medicine program began this year for the first time, while the bachelor’s program in archeology, history, ancient Greek writing is in its third year, with 64 undergraduate students from 21 countries, and this is the first English-language bachelor’s program implemented at a Greek university – says in the ad.
The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Katsaniotis, Rector of the University of Athens Thanos Dimopoulos, Professor of Medicine and President of the Athens Medical School Petros Sfikakis, and Professor of Philology at the University of Athens, Eleni Karamalegkou, among others.
